Laser Safety Industries does not offer single-layer softwall laser curtain or barrier systems.
This is not because single-layer designs are inherently ineffective, nor because the materials used in those systems are necessarily inadequate. Many laser safety materials are extremely durable and may be appropriate when properly selected for the intended application.
Instead, our decision reflects a design philosophy centered around redundancy.
Our Preference for Redundancy
Laser safety containment systems are often used to help separate personnel from hazardous laser operations.
Because of the important role these systems play, we prefer designs that incorporate multiple layers of protection rather than relying on a single containment layer alone.
For that reason, our softwall barriers and curtains utilize a dual-layer construction with an air gap between the layers.
Why We Use an Air-Gapped Design
The air gap creates separation between two independent containment layers.
While a single layer may be suitable for some applications, we believe the additional layer and separation provide an added level of confidence that aligns with our approach to laser safety containment.
This design philosophy is consistent with how we approach many aspects of laser safety: where practical, we generally prefer additional margins and redundancy rather than relying on a single protective element.
Different Manufacturers Take Different Approaches
There is no single approach to softwall laser containment.
Some manufacturers offer single-layer designs, while others utilize multiple layers or different construction methods.
Containment requirements depend on the laser being used, the operating environment, the hazard evaluation, and the overall laser safety program.
We do not suggest that single-layer systems are inappropriate in every application. Rather, we have chosen not to offer them as part of our product line.
Why We Made This Decision
At Laser Safety Industries, we believe that dual-layer, air-gapped containment systems best reflect our philosophy toward laser safety products.
Because containment systems are often relied upon as part of a broader engineering control strategy, we prefer to provide products that incorporate an additional level of redundancy.
For that reason, all Laser Safety Industries softwall barriers and curtains are manufactured using a dual-layer construction rather than a single-layer design.
As with any laser safety product, containment systems should be selected based on the specific hazard evaluation, application requirements, and guidance of a qualified Laser Safety Officer (LSO).
