Don't Select a Laser Safety Window by Color

Laser color can help describe a beam. It should not be used as the specification for selecting laser safety protection.

Two lasers that both appear green may operate at different wavelengths.

Likewise, two laser safety windows that appear to be the same color may provide very different wavelength protection.

When selecting a window, look at the specified wavelength range and OD, not simply the color of the laser or the color of the window.

What About a 532 nm Green Laser?

If the manufacturer specifies that your laser operates at 532 nm, then the laser safety window should provide appropriate protection at 532 nm.

For example, a window whose specified OD range ends at 532 nm may include that wavelength, while a laser operating above 532 nm would fall outside that specified range.

However, wavelength coverage alone does not establish that the window is appropriate.

The required OD at 532 nm must also be sufficient for the reasonably foreseeable worst-case exposure at the window.

If you're looking for a laser safety window for a green laser, start by finding the laser's actual wavelength.

Do not select protection based simply on:

"It's a green laser."

Instead, determine:
